rimbleauStudents will use this lesson plan to remind them and reinforce the rules of plagiarism/academic honesty.
Teachers will remind students of the basic rules to avoid plagiarism.
Task: Students will type the following 4 rules on Google docs and teacher must have it shared with classmates.
Give credit whenever you use:
1. another person's idea, opinion, or theory.
2. any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings-any pieces of information-that are not common knowledge.
3. quotations of another person's actual spoken or written words.
4. paraphrases of another person's spoken or written words.
Students are asked in groups of 4 to choose 1 rule and find 2 examples on the internet. Then they are to share their 2 examples with classmates and see if they agree that the example fits the rule. Jigsaw learning.
The teacher then displays on the SmartBoard good and bad examples of paraprasing with http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/pamphlets/plagiarism.shtml#original
In groups of 4, students discuss why one paragraph was a good example and one was not. This is a good lesson for junior high ESL students as it gets them speaking, reading and typing.
Teachers must walk around the class and assess their learning and at the end of class, teachers can check on Google Docs for their 8 examples to the 4 rules for plagiarism.
