My students argue that it's the trip to England, when he realizes that his life truly is in danger and that acting rashly is one of the only ways to prevent him from dying without fulfilling his plan, is the "real" turning point. But I think the question here is what do we mean by turning point?

tjgaffWhen I first started teaching Hamlet--back in '01--I found this site to be useful as a place to look for tidbits/angles/goodies to supplement my take on the play. Much of what is on here squares with what's in my Riverside Shakespeare. The site guy was a Brown U English major who became a pathologist . . .

Enjoying "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare
-
you'll need to decide for yourself about Shakespeare and Hamlet.
-
I hope you have as much fun as I have!
-
"Hamlet" is the first work of literature to look squarely at the stupidity, falsity and sham of everyday life, without laughing and without easy answers. In a world where things are not as they seem, Hamlet's genuineness, thoughtfulness, and sincerity make him special.
-
So far as I know, it's the first time this theme -- now so common -- appeared in world literature.
