Greene County Tech Assistant Superintendent Amy Lucius said students having access to these technologies is happening earlier and earlier — she noted a second grader had a cell phone at the primary school.

Lucius said many Mondays are spent trying to solve a problem started by cyber-bullying. She said parents or students will come to the principals office with cell phones or computer print outs of messaging between their child and a bully. Or they may have print outs of inappropriate pictures sent to their child.

“As soon as an incident is reported to the principal, we will call all the students involved to the office,” she said. “We try to find out what is going on. We try to determine if this is going on at school. But, many times these instances take place over the weekend or late at night while a teen is staying up late chatting or playing on their computer or texting on their cell phones.”

he Greene County Tech School Handbook has a section regarding “electronic acts of bullying.” The handbook states this is prohibited whether the act was at school or off campus; or whether or not the act was meant to be directed toward a faculty member or another student; or maliciously intended to disrupt school or create a hostile environment.
The handbook encourages students and faculty to reports instances of bullying to the principal and they can do so anonymously. The principal is responsible for investigating the incident to determine if disciplinary action is warranted. Those who report bullying will not be subject to retaliation in any form.
