In college, Severine von Tscharner Fleming’s ‘‘violent allergic reaction to L.A.’’ drove her to help set up a guerrilla farming club, visit farmers on the West Coast in a vegetable-oil pickup truck and form the Society for Agriculture and Food Ecology at the University of California, Berkeley. Now von Tscharner Fleming, the child of urban planners from Cambridge, Mass., wants her peers to get dirty. ‘‘Farming is an attractive path for people who are getting out of school and feeling like there’s kind of a toxic consumerism and not feeling too excited about working for the Man, especially seeing as he’s been spoiling our politics and a lot of our ecology,’’ she said. She started serveyourcountryfood.net, an interactive map charting farmers under 40, and is making ‘‘The Greenhorns,’’ a documentary on ‘‘organic entrepreneurs.’’ ‘‘I want to show how sweet and honest and brave and purposeful they are,’’ she said of her subjects. With an office in the village of Red Hook and farmland she is renting in the Hudson River Valley, von Tscharner Fleming knows she needs to go beyond the field in order to effect real policy change: ‘‘They’re making some kind of sausage in Washington, and I felt like some young farmer flavor would be appropriate.’’
