  • Kadima is less than three years old. It was formed by former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Mr. Sharon had been a leader of the right-wing Likud party but, like Ms. Livni and Mr. Olmert, who also began on the right, became convinced that the only way for Israel to maintain its status as a Jewish state was to end its occupation of Gaza and the West Bank, where a total of nearly four million Palestinians live.
  • Ms. Livni, a 50-year-old lawyer and mother of two sons, came to politics in the last decade, recruited by Mr. Sharon. She is Israel’s most popular politician at the moment, partly because she is seen as divorced from the back-room dealing and corruption allegations tainting many party activists.
