NET 'FOOLISHNESS' IRRITATED ALONZO By FRED KERBER ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FCAEmail FCAArchives FCAPrint FCAReprintMarch 2, 2005 -- Alonzo Mourning felt stuck in "foolishness," a situation he is glad to escape in Miami, where he'll continue his quest for an NBA title. Mourning signed with the Heat yesterday, completing a plan he developed last summer when he saw the Nets dissolving through the fire sale of Kenyon Martin. "I started thinking Miami . . . when I saw the changes the New Jersey Nets were making, because I looked at this as a small window of opportunity. I know the opportunity for me to play this game is closing and I wanted to be in a situation that would benefit me the most," Mourning told reporters in Miami, where the Heat will pay him $325,000 for the rest of the season after his $9 million buyout by Toronto. "I want to be in a situation that would benefit me as a player the most. And I didn't want to be part of any rebuilding. "I thought New Jersey was headed in that direction. [But] if they would have kept that team together, I would probably still be there," Mourning added, later noting, "I'm tired of the foolishness, I really am. I don't want to surround myself with a whole lot of foolishness." The Nets signed Mourning to a four-year, $22.6 million free-agent deal two summers ago. He underwent a kidney transplant in December, 2003. He returned this season, sought a buyout and was traded to Toronto in the Vince Carter deal.
