kristin mckinleyThis website is great for elementary students to reinforce the instruments and instrument families found in the orchestra. Students can listen to the sound of each instrument and watch short videos. There are great games and assessments for students to use, I highly recommend the Orchestration Station.

Sarah StevensThis is the kids' section of the New York Philharmonic. It has very informative pages about instruments and composers. It also has games for composition, and musical puzzles. You do need to download shockwave to view the content, but it's worth it.

SarahBeth WalkerThis is a free interactive website provided by the New York Philharmonic. Teachers can use its many interactive activities in numerous ways. The instrument lab room allows students to "create" their own instruments; another room allows students to select instruments to learn more about, while still others inform about composers or allow students to create their own compositions. Teachers could really use this tool to make music more fun.

Darrell IllenbergClassroom Connections: This is a great site for any music educator looking to have students not only learn about the orchestra or a composer, but to also explore the NY Philharmonic on a performer level. This wonderful interactive site also has games and the ability to have students compose. A great resource for any music educator looking to teach an introductory lesson in composition.
Grade Level: K-5
Cons: May need approval from the school district since it is considered a gaming site.EDIT605 music_education_resources orchestra instruments philharmonic composers

Laura CookThis is a website that I was first introduced to in my music class. It allows students to learn and play with instruments in an online capacity. This website is really good for students in learning about music. It can also be very useful for teachers who are looking to incorporate music into their curriculum, especially since so many schools no longer have music education teachers. It allows students to learn about and hear the sounds that each instrument makes and how they are all arranged in the Orchestra.

Jeanne GierkeStudents love to explore this wonderful website designed by the New York Philharmonic. I enjoy using the composer area. They have set up the composers alphabetically and provide a time line for each period of music.
It is most appropriate for 2nd -5th grades. Other areas explored are musical instruments, and note reading. It is an engaging site to use with a projector or IWB!interactive philharmonic orchestra Elementary ksumued muedtech IWB ns5 ns6

Rebecca CashThis educational website sponsored by the New York Philharmonic provides children with many different resources to learning about the history and importance of orchestra instruments, along with backgrounds to famous composers and musicians. One of the links gives examples of how to construct your own instruments using recyclable items. The website also offers many educational music games such as Musicquest, Instrument Frenzy, and Minuet Mixer. For students who desire a music challenge, there is a Composition Workshop where you can create your own music.

ViVi BowersThe New York Philharmonic Organization has created a site for kids to learn about and explore music. The site is very colorful and set up as a stage, so it is very appealing to students. Visitors to the site can play games, meet New York Philharmonic musicians, as well as other soloists and conductors. Visitors also have the option to explore the different sections and instruments (what they sound like, what they look like, etc.) in an orchestra and have the option to make their own instrument! The NYP Kidzone also posts recent music new to their site and have a large "game room" for the kids to enjoy!

The famed New York Philharmonic devotes an entire website to kids. The very attractive website is divided into sections that address areas of musical learning. But the coolest by far is the Game Room which is chock full of games as you can see in the screenshot. There’s an interesting Flash musical game where you can design your own musical instrument.
