Nagios is an open source monitoring program which runs on Linux and checks the availability of various types of network resources (web servers, email servers, processor load, disk free, etc) as well as being able to monitor other thigns like ambient temperature, etc ... and can send notifications (via email, pager, etc) when problems are detected (or resolved).
