Stacey TaylorProvides the statistics of a world population reduced to a community of 100 people. How many would be male, female, how many would live in poverty? The statistics come alive when reduced to a level where people can make the connections.
If we could turn the population of the earth into a small community of 100 people, keeping the same proportions we have today, it would be something like this... -

Jocelyn PlueThis website reduces the world population to 100 people to better help students understand the breakdown of nationalities, religions, and economic conditions.

Kathleen Morriswebsite that poses the question: “what if the population of the Earth were reduced into a community of only 100 people?” Based on this assumption, the site helps students understand what the breakdown of nationalities would be, religious representation, how many people would live in an urban area, how many people would have the majority of the world income, how many would live without clean world, those that live on less than $1.25/day, etc.

Elizabeth CrawfordA short film describing the breakdown of our planet, Miniature Earth brings into perspective the financial and social inequalities of the world. By presenting statistics in an innovative and powerful way, this short clip helps people, especially those in the U.S., appreciate what opportunities we have.

Joshua BruckThe Miniature Earth was first published on May 29, 1990 with the title "State of the Village Report", written by Donella Meadows. Nowadays Sustainability Institute, through Donella's Foundation, carries on her ideas and projects. The text used here has been modified. The statistics have been updated based on specialized publications and mainly reports on the world's population provided by The UN, PRB and others. I use this when looking at the world population and the different races and ethnicities.

While some statistics are purely demographic, others depict the state of literacy, poverty, health and living conditions. For instance, it is shocking that "If you sleep on a bed, keep your clothes in a closet, have electric light, and have a roof over your head, you are richer than 75 of the other people." Also, just over a dozen people would own a computer and only two or three would have internet. Incredible, but true, the statistics are enhanced with striking images.
While this website has a lot of emotional appeal, there facts of it are credible and have an even more profound effect on viewers like myself. The emotional sympathy for poverty-stricken populations generates income in donations to the site and purchases of the downloadable video, and the money is used to fund the site and small public projects. For me, however, watching the video graphically demonstrated the need to improve living conditions in many paces around the world, as well as the previously assumed, but now obvious, relationship between lack of housing, lack of education, poor health, and financial need.
