Nic CargnoniThis Maths Solutions website offers lesson plans that are based around literature and real life scenarios. According to Pramling & Pramling Samuelsson (2008), there are benefits for children by trying to make mathematics more familiar to them. Being able to "...link mathematical learning to children's interests" (p.68 para 3) such as role plays and drawings may involve children more actively in the activity which can encourage working mathematically skills. The example given in the article has children drawing what the teacher is reading. The teacher is asking questions along the way. The discussion amongst each other as they observe each other's drawings creates interest. The teacher is using mathematical operations such as divide, sharing and half. Students have to relate their mathematical knowledge by representing it with an illustration. This can be beneficial to young children who are yet to master their writing skills and can also benefit a number of learning styles.
