• There is increased demand for wire and cable which can tolerate higher temperatures.
• There is appetite among car manufacturers for alternative materials to copper – mostly with a view to light-weighting..
• CCS may be a replacement for smaller diameter copper wires since it gives added strength.
• CCA may be used for intermediate sizes such as starter cable.
• Lear is conducting two research projects. In North America to define use of CCS - they are yet to define but are considering replacement rules, prototypes. Tests are 80% complete on CCS. In Europe, testing is ongoing for CCA. They still need to define replacement rules but prototypes are in cars. Lear has encountered splicing problems. Ultrasonics are being tested to overcome the problem.<!--more-->
