'kiva' invites users to make a loan to an entrepreneur living somewhere else in the world. For as little as $25, a Kiva member assists another person in starting a business, all done online! By connecting online lenders to entrepreneurs students could learn economic literacy; commerce and the basic flow of money. An amazing project that a whole school could do to 'give back' and reach a lot of people around the globe.

Dmitria SokolowIf this is really authentic, then it is incredible organization that connects people who can donate money to eventually the people who need microloans. Of course, the value of the American dollar is what makes much of this affordable for US folks to give. It says that 99.01% of loans ahve been repaid. This is all proof that small loans are better, and also that loaning to women is much safer, adn changes the community . Women are more the center of the family, less apt to spend it on something less needed, and more apt to pay back. I would use this site in many ways for my classroom - to research the history of microloans (they desciribe how the Dr. Yunub, a porfessor from Bangledesh started the first Modern Microloans. I would then have students research what microloans have shown success and thenr aise money to donate to specific people around the world. Here is my ONE problem - the cute vimeo video is simple, but I don't like the example of Pedro having his farming problem solved when given a loan to buy one more animal or a tractor. This doesn't address the deeper problem, which is that people should have to grow export crops like coffee to survive, instead of growing their ownlocal food to eat and sell locally. That is a bigger topic of historical land use and control and corrupt politics.
