amyauldThis is a website totally dedicated to podcasts by and for kids. It may be more appropriate for upper elementary students. This could find its place in any content area. I would use this in my classroom to show students how to get published. We could use this for any type of writing and share it through a podcast to walk the kids through a full writing process. The kids really grow from different ways of publishing their own work.
This could really fit into any unit of study. I would probably like to use it with my persuasive writing. I like to have the students write letters to their parents about something that they want or want to do (a spin-off from a Microsoft commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUln-DA9y0c). It would be so fun to send it right to their parents' phones! -

Gabrielle PKid Cast is a site of kid-friendly safe podcasts. This is a great resource for students to find research. Students can also search this site for fun. Amy AuldSummary: Kids-Cast is a place for kids to upload their own podcasts. It is also a place for students to listen to podcasts that have already been deemed "kid acceptable" and rated on a maturity scale. Anyone can upload as long as the podcast is original and appropriate.
How I would use it: I would use this as a librarian or a teacher of any content area. As a librarian I would advertise it as a way for student to publish their own work for others to hear. As a librarian or language arts teacher I would use this as a way not only for students to publish, but also as a resource for my students to listen to.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a safe forum for children to use Audacity and other podcasting software. It's a safe place for kids to publish their own work.
Bias: The only bias may lie in the screening process. The website notes that each podcast uploaded is screened and "scored" like video games (E=Everyone). Everyone's perception of appropriateness can be different. Also, it does make one questions intellectual freedom.
Credibility: This website seems very well-maintained, but there is little information about the creators of this website. It makes me question the credibility of the website.
Currency: Because kids are constantly uploading new podcasts, the website is constantly changing. It makes me wonder how long it takes for the reviewers to score each upload.
Who wrote it?: There is little to no information on the creators of Kid-Cast. The idea seems very promising, but the lack of information on the creators makes me question their credibility and rating system.
Readability: The website is very easy to use and read. Students will have no trouble navigating it (especially if they have already operated Audacity!)
What about advertising?: There is no advertising on the website. -
