This document constitutes the Best Practice and Implementation Guide for the Phase 1 specification of the IMS Digital Repositories Interoperability (DRI) Project Group. Phase 1 focus is on the core functional interactions between the Mediation and Provision layers of the Functional Architecture (see the DRI Information Model). This specification is intended to utilize schemas already defined elsewhere (e.g., IMS Meta-Data and Content Packaging), rather than attempt to introduce any new schema. Section 2 of this specification offers guidance on XQuery, Z39.50, and SOAP, which are the key technologies identified for implementation of the core functions. Section 3 identifies technologies, which are not included in the current specification, but are flagged up as under consideration for future phases of the DRI work. It should be emphasized that these are candidate technologies and their inclusion here is not a commitment to their future adoption, but rather an indication of the current forward view of the group. Section 4 attempts to relate the technologies adopted to the user experience of using these core functions. Section 5 explores the various roles supported by the specification. Section 6 discusses the issues of conformance as they relate to implementing the specification. Appendix A offers a glossary of terms, which are used throughout the specification. Appendix B identifies some of the issues that could possibly direct the future development of the specification. Appendix C refers to additional resources that are important to the specification.
