Rikki ShipmanThis website is useful in supporting the teaching of fractions and decimals. The sites main attributes are lessons ideas, games and activities related around the idea of fractions and decimals. The BOS k-6 Mathematics syllabus (2007 p. 61) recognises that for stage one children, ‘describing and modelling halves and quarters of objects and collections, occurring in everyday situations’ is an element that should be taught. Students can actively engage in these activities on the site and gain a greater understanding of this area. Mills, (2011) states ‘the foundation of understanding fractions is the idea that they are parts of a whole. The fact that one whole object can be divided into many equal parts, with each part having a name relative to the original whole, opens up a whole new realm of number understanding for the students.’ This directly links back to this site as the site uses games and activities to teach children about the roles of fractions and why and when they are needed. It is age relevant for primary school students and is graded for those who are only just beginning their learning.
