This is not the country I love– meaning, this is not the country I grew up loving. It is not what I thought it was, perhaps it was never what I thought it was. It is not what I was told it was. It is not what my too old, emotionally inaccessible but nonetheless respectable, fought-at-Iwa-Jima father led me to believe it was. It is not what its founding documents say it is. It is not what its founders, flawed though they were individually, imagined it to be.
