Jayme JohnsonGoogle Sky
Google Sky is a part of Google Earth that allows you to explore space and star systems. It allows you to view star systems using the best images from NASA satellites, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the Hubble Telescope. Google Sky is a great way to view the planets and constellations and witness the birth of galaxies and other items in the universe.
In the classroom –
Students can write poems about the stars.
Students can discuss objects in the solar system and describe differences between them.
Students can create stories about the night sky.
Students can build presentations about the history of the planets.
Students can discuss the atmosphere of the Earth and how it protects life on Earth.
Students can create videos about the importance of the sun or climate change. -

neuenschwaaThis is a very engaging tool for teaching students about space and simulating space in the classroom. I could see myself using this tool when talking about space to make the concept come to life.

"Google Sky is going to blow your mind. It lets you search the heavens and see images of stars, planets and galaxies taken from telescopes, probes and satellites.
It includes infrared and microwave images as well as a historic map of the stars made by Giovanni Maria Cassini in 1792. If you don't know where to start, the site has some suggestions that you'll love. " -

Suzy Bricker"Traveling to the stars has never been easier! To help you explore the far reaches of our universe, we have teamed up with astronomers at some of the largest observatories in the world to bring you a new view of the sky. Using Google Maps this tool provides an exciting way to browse and explore the universe. You can find the positions of the planets and constellations on the sky and even watching the birth of distant galaxies as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. We are particularly excited about the ability to view the universe at different wavelengths, to see how it would look if our eyes worked in the x-rays or infrared. As you explore these new layers, play with the transparency to blend between the different wavelengths and see how different parts of the universe light up at different wavelengths. If you are interested in what's happening on the sky tonight or over the next few months then check out the podcasts from Earth and Sky or search for the position of your favorite planet."
