我问Glazer这个Friend Connect是否是为了跟Facebook Connect或MySpace的Data Availability打对台？他回答，“很多人可能会这么想，但这些程序代码不可能三天就写出来啊！（Facebook与MySpace发表声明后）”
Google跟Facebook与MySpace不同，没有自己统一的社交网站。Friend Connect采用开放分散式作法，让网络上99%不具社交功能的网站也能加入社交行列。
Google设立Guacamole网站来示范Friend Connect的功能
相容于Friend Connect的网站可从既有的社交网站（包括Facebook、Google Talk、Hi5、Orkut与Plaxo）检视、邀请、或与新旧朋友进行互动。
目前看得到的示范网站只有几个，包括Google的Guacamole网站。“我们很希望从网站所有人获得回应，了解他们希望获得何种网站与应用。 ”Glazer表示。音乐人Ingrid Michaelson便将 iLike的OpenSocial应用整合至Friend Connect，如此不需离开自己的站便可与朋友联系。
Plaxo营销副总裁 John McCrea 表示，Google的Friend Connect 是把原来“封闭式花园”（比如Facebook）模式改成比较开放的社交网站。与其提供widget小程序把网友带至特定网站的专属社交图表，何不将这些社交图表变成widget，让任何网页或网站都能作社交？
“Friend Connect 提供精灵引导页面，站长只需填入资料、选择社交应用、拷贝程式码、贴上，存储就好了，不需要写程式，非常容易，但又很实用。”Glazer表示。它提供的功能包括使用者注册、邀请、会员列表、张贴信息、以及OpenSocial应用。
Friend Connect核心有三个新兴社交标准：OpenID、oAuth与OpenSocial。

Glazer 强调，Google要让用户掌控自己的信息。“站长没权力知道我有哪些朋友，但我可选择连接登入我的Facebook帐号，并邀请朋友。”他说。“每个站可可自行公布API的使用方式，”Glazer表示，“我预期Friend Connect成熟后，我们会看到越来越多人链接，更多标准界面被启用/注册，这目前还不是标准。”
