The Galaxy Zoo files contain almost a quarter of a million galaxies which have been imaged with a camera attached to a robotic telescope the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, no less). In order to understand how these galaxies — and our own — formed, we need your help to classify them according to their shapes — a task at which your brain is better than even the fastest computer.

Stem Education• Explore the types of galaxies in our universe – You don't need a powerful telescope to help astronomers understand galaxies and the details of their formation. At www.galxayzoo.org, there is a collection of clear images that you can examine, as well as a form on which to report your observations. If you see some odd distortion in the images, you may have identified a "gravitational lens." That's when masses of galaxies are so great that they bend light and distort what lies beyond them.

Welcome to
GalaxyZoo
, the project which harnesses the power of the internet - and your brain - to classify a million galaxies. By taking part, you'll not only be contributing to scientific research, but you'll view parts of the Universe that literally no-one has ever seen before and get a sense of the glorious diversity of galaxies that pepper the sky.
