Incentive effects of religion. Could it be that power promises to sort things out, and state religion is hoped to be an insurance policy for power when they don't turn out?
Catholics and Protestants alike are less depressed when bad things happen to them – for example, when they lose their jobs. Religious belief provides comfort in troubled times.
