AT&T now offers $19.95 high-speed Internet service that doesn’t require an AT&T phone line, a deal that federal regulators required as part of the acquisition of BellSouth in late 2006.
“They’re not living up to the agreement,” said Bob Williams, director of Hearusnow.org, a project of the Consumers Union.
Stand-alone DSL, on the other hand, can be ordered by calling AT&T.
For the DSL deal, consumers can call either 1-800-ATT-2020 or 1-800-626-9149.
At least one AT&T salesperson reached by phone by a reporter acting as an interested customer on Monday referred to the $19.95 per month DSL as “horrible.”
“I doubt if you’ll like it,” she said.
The agreement with the FCC required AT&T to start selling up to 768 kilobits per second of stand-alone DSL for $19.95 by the end of 2007. AT&T did so by the end of the year.
The $19.95 per month price is supposed to last for 30 months.
