We have had a lot of parish closings in our diocese as well. I don't know if everyone is "blending" together as nicely as these three parishes have, but how wonderful that they could all rally around a new patron and even be present for his canonization! That really is getting off to a good new start!

  • Twenty-one members of the Pontiac parish -- a merger of three parishes: St. Michael, St. Vincent de Paul and Shrine of St. Joseph -- were to be at the Vatican for the canonization today, Kohn said.

"They've really rallied around their new patron," Kohn said. "They want to use St. Damien as an example of someone who brought hope to people in need."
