En tant qu’écrivain, j’ai reçu le Web comme une bénédiction. Les recherches, autrefois synonymes de journées entières au milieu des livres et magazines des bibliothèques, s’effectuent désormais en un instant.

Mon esprit attend désormais les informations de la façon dont le Net les distribue : comme un flux de particules s’écoulant rapidement.

Ils ont découvert que les personnes utilisant ces sites présentaient « une forme d’activité d’écrémage », sautant d’une source à une autre et revenant rarement à une source qu’ils avaient déjà visitée. En règle générale, ils ne lisent pas plus d’une ou deux pages d’un article ou d’un livre avant de « bondir » vers un autre site. Parfois, ils sauvegardent un article long, mais il n’y a aucune preuve qu’ils y reviendront jamais et le liront réellement.

Socrate n’avait pas tort, les nouvelles technologies ont souvent les effets qu’il redoutait, mais il manquait de vision à long terme. Il ne pouvait pas prévoir les nombreux moyens que l’écriture et la lecture allaient fournir pour diffuser l’information, impulsant des idées fraîches et élargissant la connaissance humaine (voire la sagesse).

L’arrivée de l’imprimerie de Gutenberg, au XVème siècle, déclencha une autre série de grincements de dents. L’humaniste italien Hieronimo Squarciafico s’inquiétait que la facilité à obtenir des livres conduise à la paresse intellectuelle, rende les hommes « moins studieux » et affaiblisse leur esprit. Je ne suis pas certain que la lecture "en profondeur" soit contradictoire avec cet effet "papillonage" superficiel de l'information du à internet. Je pense que si l'on saute rapidement d'une information à l'autre sans approfondir, c'est parceque l'offre d'information a été multipliée avec internet, on devient donc plus exigeant. Mais après avoir fait le tour de l'offre proposée, on fait sa selection et on plonge sérieusement dans un article en profondeur. C'est en tout cas comme çà que je consulte les journaux sur internet par exemple. Je fonctionne également comme çà dans les bibliothèques (avec des livres en papier !!!), je fais le tour des rayons en feuilletant avant de choisir le bouquin que je vais emprunter.

Je pense aussi que les internautes, moi ça m'arrive souvent, lient les commentaires avant le texte. Suivant les réactions ça peut plus ou moins donner envie de lire l'article.

il vous (Aka) a suffit de nous "accuser", avant de balancer l'article, d'être atteint du symptôme, et de nous "défier" pour que nous (je suis certain que je n'ai pas été le seul, vous nous donnerez les statistiques pour cet article?) lisions ce long (bien plus long que vos autres articles d'ailleurs il me semble) article en entier.

Mais lorsqu'il réponds à la fille, je ne sais pas elle mais moi j'ai compris "dilater les heures" au sens : quand on lit il peut paraitre que le temps n'est pas passé vite : les heures se sont dilatées, sont devenues plus longues. Lorsqu'on est sur internet : les heures se retractent et sont donc plus courtes.

L'univers tout entier repose sur des équilibres mathématiques, physiques et métaphysiques. Même la conscience humaine appartient à ses règles.

En privilégiant les résumés et autres synthèses, toujours par manque de temps, on laisse le soin à d'autres personnes de condenser l'information à notre place pour nous la livrer pré-machée et pré-digérée. Sauf que celà reste leurs synthèses à eux, ce que eux en ont retenus et pas forcément la nôtre si nous avions eu le temps d'analyser la totalité des informations ...

la lecture profonde et exclusive est un privilège de la jeunesse, internet ou pas. Par la suite il devient de plus en plus difficile de résister à la tentation d'optimiser son emploi du temps en sautant les passages barbants.

Je crois à un effet hypnotique de l'écran. Je ne peux pas le prouver mais il est certain qu'il me faut 3-4 jours de vacances pour décrocher de l'internet et sans internet je reviens naturellement aux livres.

À partir du moment où le contenu ne reflète plus le titre et où j'estime que j'ai pris ce qu'il y avait à prendre, je passe aux commentaires.

je pratique l'info depuis 87, et mon 1er abo internet fut chez Calvacom en 91. Je n'ai pas quitté la toile depuis. J'aurais donc du, d'après cet article, ressentir les effets décrits plus haut avant les autres, et ça n'a pas été le cas. Par ailleurs, je lis plus de livre qu'autrefois, et même parfois des pavés de 800 pages sans décrocher ou m'ennuyer.

un esprit occupé ailleurs, ou préoccupé, et l'intru serait tout simplement la peur, entretenue et répandue un peu partout depuis ... qques récentes années justement. L'esprit cherche à se concentrer, mais n'y arrive pas. Il est préoccupé par autre chose. Coupez vous du monde des medias évènementiels pdt 1an, sans pour autant quitter la toile et vos centres d'intérêts, et vous retrouverez en partie la concentration. Nous fonctionnons en mode 'alerte' permanente, alerte mail, alerte news, alerte bourse, alerte sms, et il me semble que cela contribue à alimenter le trouble.

La question serait plutôt de savoir ce qu'on recherche au travers de ces milliers de clics quotidien, car visiblement, nous n'obtenons pas la réponse que nous cherchons.

Encore une idée intéressante : quel est le but de cette frénésie ? Est-ce une drogue ? Qu'attendons-nous de toutes ces informations ?

Je continue à lire de nombreux livres sans faiblesse.

Je ne trouve pas le titre trompeur. On devient incapable de lire un livre, on a moins de capacité de concentration intellectuelle = on devient idiot. Prétendre que c'est une « autre » façon de penser me paraît être un cache-misère assez pathétique.

ne pouvait pas prévoir des inventions qui seront découvertes 2000 ans après lui... Mais je pense en outre qu'opposer au jugement de Platon les « nombreux moyens ... pour diffuser l'information », c'est rater complètement son propos, lui qui, justement, condamne l'accumulation de l'information comme source de bêtise...

peut-on préciser que c'est l'influence du téléphone portable qui accélère quelquechose d'une exigence de rapidité, d'immédiateté qui pourraient contribuer au défaut de concentration ? Il est peut-être un peu tôt pour se prononcer.

Les spécialistes sont de nos jours "pressés" de constater des changements qu'ils voudraient vérifier dans une échelle de temps simplifiée (le phénomène supposé de l'accélération de l'histoire).

il ne faut pas négliger le fait que pour constater un changement profond dans la société, il faut le recul historique nécessaire, quelques dizaines d'années pourraient faire l'affaire, au train où vont les choses... Non ?

HAL souhaite prendre le contrôle total de la mission, elle tue sans vergogne des humains. Cette machine est totalement amorale, elle est le fruit de techniciens qui lui ont tout donné mis à part l'éthique de l'homme.

je constate que personnellement, quand une info trouvée sur le net (par exemple, dans cet article), je ne vais pas hésiter à "traiter la chose" en profondeur : lecture de l'article, lecture exhaustive des commentaires laissés, des articles liés, des topics des forums, prendre le temps de laisser un commentaire, d'en parler avec des amis, sur un autre forum...

Si j'ai pris le temps de le lire jusqu'au bout, c'est que parallèlement à mes lectures hypertextuelles du net, je lis aussi beaucoup de livres en papier.

L'auteur évoque aussi les stimuli permanents qui poussent le penseur du web à sauter d'un texte à l'autre (page web par lien hypertexte ou SMS par petit signal sonore ou encore pop-up pour une annonce de pub), donc qui l'amène a priori à perdre de la concentration, à moins approfondir.

Pourquoi ne pas créer un effet de densification comme si les liens hypertextes devenaient plus visibles et plus traçables quand une réflexion agrégerait des informations particulières, des liens avec des réflexions menées par d'autres (un peu à l'image de ces magnifiques échangeurs à x étages des autoroutes américaines). On circulerait toujours aussi instantanément d'un lien hypertexte à une vidéo, mais le cheminement d'un clic à l'autre densifierait la pensée en facilitant l'agrégation de savoirs (écrits de manière succincte), ces agrégats de pensées circulant comme des électrons attirées par un noyau et formant un atome (de réflexion).

Consulter de nombreux sites apporte finalement très peu de connaissances. Je me force maintenant à résumer tous les documents lus en utilisant un schéma type brainstorming en mettant les concepts abordés et les liens entre eux. C'est un essai. et pour l'instant ça marche, je retiens les sites consultés et les informations apportées de manière durable et assez précise.

Et le médium ou toute autre technologie que nous utilisons pour apprendre et exercer la lecture joue un rôle important dans la façon dont les circuits neuronaux sont modelés dans nos cerveaux. Les expériences montrent que les lecteurs d’idéogrammes, comme les chinois, développent un circuit mental pour lire très différent des circuits trouvés parmi ceux qui utilisent un langage écrit employant un alphabet. Les variations s’étendent à travers de nombreuses régions du cerveau, incluant celles qui gouvernent des fonctions cognitives essentielles comme la mémoire et l’interprétation des stimuli visuels et auditifs. De la même façon, nous pouvons nous attendre à ce que les circuits tissés par notre utilisation du Net seront différents de ceux tissés par notre lecture des livres et d’autres ouvrages imprimés.

On a longtemps cru que notre réseau mental, les connexions denses qui se forment parmi nos cent milliards et quelques de neurones, sont largement établis au moment où nous atteignons l’âge adulte. leur hypothèse simpliste voulant que nous nous « porterions mieux » si nos cerveaux étaient assistés ou même remplacés par une intelligence artificielle, est inquiétante. Cela suggère que d’après eux l’intelligence résulte d’un processus mécanique, d’une suite d’étapes discrètes qui peuvent être isolés, mesurés et optimisés. Dans le monde de Google, le monde dans lequel nous entrons lorsque nous allons en ligne, il y a peu de place pour le flou de la réflexion. L’ambiguïté n’est pas un préliminaire à la réflexion mais un bogue à corriger. Le cerveau humain n’est qu’un ordinateur dépassé qui a besoin d’un processeur plus rapide et d’un plus gros disque dur.

Une lecture tranquille ou une réflexion lente et concentrée sont bien les dernières choses que ces compagnies désirent. C’est dans leur intérêt commercial de nous distraire.

Il avait peur que, comme les gens se reposaient de plus en plus sur les mots écrits comme un substitut à la connaissance qu'ils transportaient d'habitude dans leur tête, ils allaient, selon un des intervenants d'un dialogue, « arrêter de faire travailler leur mémoire et devenir oublieux. » Et puisqu'ils seraient capables de « recevoir une grande quantité d'informations sans instruction appropriée », ils risquaient de « croire posséder une grande connaissance, alors qu'ils seraient en fait largement ignorants ». Ils seraient « remplis de l'orgueil de la sagesse au lieu de la sagesse réelle ».
