kaatibunFilmsite.org is an award-winning website for classic film buffs, students, moviegoers and anyone else interested in the great movies of the last century. Detailed plot synopses, review commentary and film reference material are just some of the features available on the site. The site also contains film analysis, original content, information on the top films and most memorable movie scenes, "best of…" articles, and the most popular film quotes in all genres of film. Its many resources include a comprehensive overview of film history, a complete survey of the Academy Awards (Oscars), milestones and turning points in the industry, and background and descriptions for hundreds of classic Hollywood/American and other English-language movies from the last one hundred years. In the mid-1990s when it was first launched, filmsite.org was one of the first websites to initiate the trend to select 100 Greatest Films in the history of cinema.
Film critic and columnist Roger Ebert, author of The Great Movies (2002), The Great Movies II (2005), and The Great Movies III (2010) has made many detailed references to filmsite.org in his Chicago Sun-Times "Answer Man" column and in his many writings about the Great Movies over the years. He has written that the site is "an invaluable repository of movie descriptions and dialogue" and that it is an "awesome website [that] contains detailed descriptions of 300 great American films, along with many other riches." -

Kathy RennerAMC Filmsite.org: Greatest Films, written and ed. by Tim Dirks. Internet Resource. Reviewed in 2011feb CHOICE.

[Visited Nov'10] This Web site, a masterful accomplishment recognized by none other than Roger Ebert, is the brainchild of Dirks, whose wide-ranging education and experience as teacher, administrator, and even museum curator (Computer History Museum and the Tech Museum of Innovation) have informed its design. He is the quintessential fan. At the site's core is Tips on Film Viewing. Dirks follows his own viewing suggestions to create interpretive and descriptive plot outlines, with production notes and historical references for over 300 key films, garnished with lobby cards and poster graphics. Note that there is no ranking, since "greatness is extremely subjective." Years before the fad for film lists, Dirks selected his 100 "greatest films," then another 100, and so on. The films are all English language. Further lists include best quotations, most controversial films, best film kisses, cult films, horror films, and tearjerkers, to name but a few. Additionally, the site offers extensive and up-to-date Oscar listings, a comprehensive Genres list, and Film History Milestones and Film History accessible by decade.
The site is tabbed across the top of the page and is cross-referenced. A search for an actor, director, or film title will find every instance, returned ten per page. The Review tab offers Dirks's in-depth reviews of hundreds of films; of special value are the reviews of sequels for most of the major film franchises. The Video tab retrieves brief interviews with a wide range of film folk, most sourced from AMCtv.com, the parent Web site. Though there is advertising, some of it annoyingly animated, the average Web browser will be able to ignore it. This site represents one man's opinion, but he is a well-informed man, and the detailed summaries, reviews, and interviews are very useful for the films included. Summing Up: Recommended.
