Adam BroderMADRID, Spain - The Spanish government wants to liberalize Spain's abortion laws to allow women to terminate a pregnancy up to 14 weeks without restrictions and to allow teenagers 16 and older to do so without parental consent.
Parliament has yet to vote on the proposed legislation which would amend a 1985 law that allowed abortions within 12 weeks of conception in cases of rape, within 22 weeks in cases where the fetus was genetically malformed, or at any point during pregnancy if a doctor certified the woman's physical or mental health were at risk.
The new legislation would still allow abortion of malformed fetuses up to 22 weeks.
Teenagers seeking an abortion would first need to be informed of their rights and available benefits to mothers. -
