Delkin DVD Burnaway Portable Combo DVD/CD Writeable
Oct 16 '05
Author's Product Rating

Pros
The Delkin DVD Burnaway comes with a very nice carrying case
Cons
The Delkin DVD Burnaway does NOT measure up to its specs and should be avoided
The Bottom Line
Do not buy the Delkin DVD Burnaway. There are much better and faster units available with the same features for the same money.
Full Review For 2 1/2 years I have owned an Apacer Disc Steno, Model CP 200. It is a portable (A/C or battery powered) downloading device that writes to CD's. I use it to download from my digital camera storage cards. The cards plug directly into the unit, so it is very convenient. It has served me well, but I felt limited, especially since I recently purchased a Nikon D2x, with a 4 gig CF storage card. I wanted to upgrade to a device that would do what the Apacer CP 200 does, but which would write to DVD's as well as to CD's, to increase the download capability.
I researched a little and felt that I had two choices: upgrade to the newer model Apacer, the CP 300, or purchase the Delkin DVD Burnaway. The specs for both models are very similar, as well as the features and functions. Both will write to DVD's or CD's. Both will accept the same memory cards. Both will play DVD movies when attached to the A/V inputs of a television. The price of each unit is comparable, about $10 more for the Apacer CP 300. Both are over $300. I leaned towards the Delkin as it claimed to have a faster write speed to DVD's, the most important feature for me.
I ordered the Delkin DVD Burnaway from My Digital Discount in New York state. I normally would not mention the name of the supplier, but in this case I have, as they proved to be outstanding in their responsiveness and efforts to satisfy me as their customer.
Upon receiving the Delkin, I immediately did a few downloads, both from Fuji XD cards as well as CF cards from my Nikon. These downloads were to CD's. My trials were modest - 100 megabyte downloads. My initial reaction was disappointment, as it took 4 minutes and 20 seconds to download the 100 megabytes with the Delkin. So I decided to compare the speed of the Delkin to my Apacer CP 200. The very same download (onto the same type of CD discs) took 2 minutes and 52 seconds in the "secure" mode and only 1 minute and 42 seconds in the "fast" mode, the mode I always use
