Mr MaherAn English professor from the University of California wrote the Wikipedia use guide and policy in 2006. By first describing the special nature of encyclopedias, the articles details the necessity of using vetted primary or secondary sources. From this perspective the special nature of Wikipedia can be more comprehensively considered. (Be sure to catch the shower analogy used to call attention to the "history" tab.

seraph tsengThere being two limitations, Wikipedia should not be cited as primary or sole references for college-level essays or research papers. For one thing, Wikipedia, like any other encyclopedias, is not suitable to be the reference for issues that are central to an argument, complex or controversial. Articles of encyclopedia are second-or third-hand summaries. However, college-level research papers' resources should be authoritative in their field. Thus, Wikipedia can merely be the starting points for learning or support minor, non-controversial points of a paper. For the other, created by an open community of authors, resources' credibility is open to doubt and have three major weaknesses: firstly, Wikipedia is an uneven resource, having more information about one field but less about another; secondly, it can become contested terrain of vandalism where edit wars are on; thirdly, its dynamic characteristic makes the reference either out-of-date or unsearchable. In a word, appropriate use of Wikipedia is required when citing for college-level papers or crucial essays.

The principle of "many-eyes" policing upon which Wikipedia depends for quality-control
-
uneven resource
-
contested terrain of "edit wars," political protest, or vandalism
-
dynamic, constantly mutating resource
-
Because it is communal, dynamic, and unrefereed, Wikipedia is not just an encyclopedia of knowledge. It is better thought of as a combination of encyclopedia and "blog." It is the world's blog.
