  Amazing website that allows teachers to join and create classes for FREE!  Once you and your class are members the teacher can post readings, homework assignments, websites, etc. for the students to do or look at.  You can also add resources to your "Library" (which is the feature that I use most often).  I add things such as worksheets that I want to print, links to websites and projects that I want to remember.  This website is a very valuable resource for 21st century teachers!

  The FAMILY and COMMUNITY are at the core of Chinese ethics/morality. To violate RITES would be to SHAME the family, and family ties are so close, most children don't want to give shame to their family.
  
  Remember the old ANCESTOR belief from the Shang, too. Dishonour an ancestral king, and he might get angry. You're being a "bad son."

  Most textbooks make a big deal of the emperor who followed the Warring States Period doing this sort of standardization of measures. But we see that it was an old idea going back to the early Zhou.

  DEMOCRACY has a different "flavor" in Chinese history too: the people are not to be given everything they want; the king must give only what is helpful to an orderly, harmonious society. This is beautiful as an ideal, but problematic as a reality. (Though the same thing is true for Democracy, as current US politics clearly show.)

  My own theory, based on what we've learned so far, is this:
  When a king dies, he becomes an ANCESTOR. And ancestors are powerful, and we suffer if we anger them with disrespect / lack of piety.
  So 3 years is an emphatic gesture of respect.
  On top of that, yes, we've seen that Yao was a sincere servant of the people, and a tireless one, so they probably did mean it sincerely. When Franklin Roosevelt died, American mourning reached unseen heights. The films of that are remarkably moving. The American people relied on him as a father who carried them through the Great Depression and the Second World War. They shed real tears and came out in throngs to pay their last respects.

  For what it's worth, my parallel between the Confucian Classics and the Bible was to communicate the IMPORTANCE of them to the Chinese people, not the DIFFICULTY LEVEL.
  I've read the Bible in several translations over the decades, and am struck by how much easier the ShuJing is to read. I find the style much simpler, and the ideas much more modern (the astronomical and symbolic stuff aside).

  We see that kings either retired when they felt too old, stayed on the throne until they died, or co-ruled with younger men.
  In a dynasty, you rule as long as you're able, generally. Two Qing emperors between them ruled for 125 years combined.

  I would underline that he's emphatically NOT a god, but rather an intelligent, practical, and good-willed human. That's enough for the Chinese to accomplish what took a god in the Hebrew text.
  Note the evidence, too, that the King is not "god-like" (in the Judeo-Christian-Islamic sense) in another way: he doesn't dictate arbitrarily: instead, he seeks counsel and input from other worthy men, and then makes his decision. He doesn't just speak his commandments; he listens, first, to others whose intelligence and point of view he values. THEN he dictates.
  God in the Bible is a very different kind of authority, not known for seeking input before issuing commandments. ;-)
