etony33A worthwhile commercial site for links to historical documents, biographies, and even on-line books, on 18th century America. These archival materials are displayed in their original formats so they can be read and examined close-up and in detail. Of special interest is the Maryland Gazette containing George Washington's Journal of his historic trip to the Ohio Valley. It is the only original copy privately held. Materials are free for personal use.

Michelle PhillipsThis site is organized in a student-friendly format. The text is large, descriptions are concise, and the toolbar on the left side of the page helps students navigate easily. I love the inclusion of "Freedom Documents" as well as "Rare Images." The "Join or Die" propaganda from the "Rare Images" tab is also featured in our 5th grade social studies text (students can make a text-to-media connection). "Pages from the Past" gives students a glimpse into colonial-era printing and publication. What an authentic experience!

Anne HubbellStudents could research many topics about American history using this site. There are examples of newspapers, maps, and almanacs from the 18th century. There are songs that students can listen to from the different time periods in our history. There are also images from the past that students can even use for free. There are instructions on how to access these images and how to give credit to this source.

Paul HavankoPurpose: This site is devoted to being primary source material from 18th Century America.
Bias: There appears to be no bias in this site.
Credibility: Many of the articles feature a works cited section at the end of the page.
Currency: The site seems to be updated quarterly.
Who wrote it? Don Vitale is editor and publisher of Archiving Early America. A former journalist, he served as senior lecturer at the University of Southern California's Department of Journalism. He is presently archivist for the Keigwin and Mathews Collection of 18th century historical documents of early America.
Readability: The site contains a lot of information about the Colonial era, the Revolutionary War, and the Early Republic. It reads as one might expect from a history textbook or historical biography. Fonts are large enough to not cause eye strain.
What about advertising? The site is supported with numerous advertising, some of it in the margins of the webpages, some of it almost embedded in the various articles.
Summary: This site has some great information about the American Revolution, though I feel that some of the organization could be more streamlined to make it easier for students to find their way around. Menus help with some of the navigation, but it lacks a stronger design that would make it stand out as a more impressive resource. I would mainly use it as a site for students to visit while gathering research. -
