chris deason"'Brand jornalism' is the phenomenon wheeby companies ('brands') produce their own conteny in order to attract attention to their products and portray them in a favorable light. Is "transparency the new objectivity," as proponents claim? I think it goes a long way, but still places the onus on readers to identify the bias. This can be difficult - but no less difficult than spotting the bias in traditional news sources. These media obscure the connection between what the (misleadingly) call 'objective' journalism and the brands - large entertainment and media consortia - they represent.

Katie Day"OLDaily - short for Online Learning Daily - is my contribution to the growing world of email newsletters. You might ask, does the world need another online newsletter, especially in the field of online learning? My answer - obviously - is yes. What makes OLDaily different from other email newsletters, then? Three things: content selection, value-add, and website support." RE Stephen Downes: He works for the National Research Council of Canada where he has served as a Senior Researcher, based in Moncton, New Brunswick, since 2001. Affiliated with the Learning and Collaborative Technologies Group, Institute for Information Technology, Downes specializes in the fields of online learning, new media, pedagogy and philosophy."

Intentional objects
Tim Crane, Ratio, January 6, 2011.
I used to read (and write) stuff like this a lot and it has had a lasting influence. This paper, from 2001, is new to me but an excellent representation of how I would think of things like sentences in the brain and objects of thought. The argument at its core is simple: while we naively think that we think about thinks in the world, such a story cannot be true because we can just as easily think about things that don't exist, like purple dragons, or about entities with indeterminate properties, like a man with no particular hair colour. The 'aboutness' of the thought is in the thought itself. This (to me) means that the meaning of thoughts is not the same as the meaning of sentences, and therefore, that th

Email authentication is a system whereby a signature in an email header matches a certificate in the domain name system (DNS), thus certifying the message's origin. "
There are three major steps required to add the DKIM signature to outgoing mail:
- Generate the domain key for your domain
- Add the public domain key to the DNS records for your domain, so that recipients can retrieve it for decrypting the DKIM header
- Turn on authentication to begin adding the DKIM header to outgoing mail messages."
More here, from Google blogs.

Esther FinkFounded in 1995, Stephen's Web is best described as a digital research laboratory for innovation in the use of online media in education. More than just a site about online learning, it is intended to demonstrate new directions in the field for practitioners and enthusiasts.
Specifically, the design of Stephen's Web is intended to embody the following new directions in online learning:
- Integration of Learning, Practice and Research - it is the author's belief that learning in an online environment will gradually merge with other domains of activity, and specifically, practice and research. Consequently, Stephen's Web merges these three uses of online content into a single space.
- Integration of Content and Community - it is the author's belief that content and community - that is, the presentation of content and consequent discussion of content - should be presented as an integrated unit and not segregated (as is typical in learning management systems).
- Content Syndication - a single online learning resource is depicted on this view as one node in a network of resources, whereby these resources exchange content and services among each other. This outcome is achieved by means of content syndication and supported throughout Stephen's Web
- Dynamic Organization - learning, and the presentation of learning, should not be static. On any given day, the organization, structure and delivery of learning resources may change according to the changing knowledge of the instructor, the changing nature of the field, and the changing preferences of the learner. -

I supposed that if I had really looked I could have found a lot more. The point is, there is a discipline of 'new literacy' (or whatever we'll call it) forming, and it is composed of elements such as the examples that are being shown here. Education in this new literacy can - and must - replace the naive memory-based retention-based fact-based text-and-test model of education that has dominated for the last century or so. As I stated at my talk in Melbourne, one of the problems we had over the last century was that it was too easy to get students to learn things, to remember things - too easy to persuade them, too easy to convince them, too easy to march them into prejudice and war

The R&D activities will focus across two dimensions: how access to a wide variety of learning opportunities can best be managed in an online environment; and how technologies can be assembled to best provide seamless access to a large variety of educational resources and services. In essence, the scientific problem is one of designing an educational infrastructure based on future best practices and then developing an educational application that will work within that infrastructure.
