How are they different in their essence? What is the true experience of faith and what is the false experience of faith?
-
But being persuaded that the goodness and trustworthiness and beauty of Christ and his promises are factual is not saving faith.
-
To be sure, believing that Christ and his promises are true, based on a testimony, is a necessary part of faith. But it is not the saving essence of faith.
-
being persuaded with the mind that something is true is not the same as apprehending the beauty and worth of the truth
-
Even he “believes” that. But he does not see it as beautiful and precious and wonderfully suited to accomplish good and holy purposes.
-
In other words, saving faith in the promises of God includes spiritual enjoyment of the God of the promises. I don’t want to overstate it. I only say that saving faith must include this enjoyment. Enjoyment of the glory of God is not the whole of what faith is. But without it, faith is dead.
-
What we must say about resting is that to be a saving resting it must be a sense of safety from hell, but also a sense of satisfaction in the beauties of God (Psalm 16:11).
-
We rest in security, and we rest in sweetness.

They loved power, and they loved it that God gave them power. But they did not love God.

We are dealing here with a person, not just an idea or a tradition or a religion or a practice. Jesus Christ was and is a living person. And he wills to be known, loved, trusted, followed, worshiped, enjoyed. He is alive and is in this room among us by his Spirit this morning receiving all that we do, and responding to us.

The reality is that all of us can imagine something better for ourselves than our circumstances today. The greater reality is that, if you love and follow Jesus, God always writes a better story for you than you would write for yourself. The “better” is based on this: God himself is the best, most satisfying thing you could ever have or experience, and, therefore, fullness of life is ultimately found not in any earthly success or relationship or accomplishment, but in your proximity to God through faith.
-
The dark side of this good news is that you may have to walk through pain, disappointment, rejection, and suffering for seventy or eighty years. The brighter (and prevailing) side says God never makes a mistake in choosing good for you. Everything you experience — expected or unexpected, wanted or unwanted, pleasing or painful — is God’s good plan to make you his own (John 10:27–29), to give you himself forever (Psalm 16:11), and to use your life to reveal himself and his glory to the world around you (Isaiah 43:25; 1 Corinthians 10:31).
-
I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:11–13)

When we have little and have lost much, Christ comes and reveals himself as more valuable than what we have lost. And when we have much and are overflowing in abundance, Christ comes and he shows that he is far superior to everything we have.”

If Christian pastors are eventually imprisoned for their faith in the United States, it will not be the first time. Early in America’s history, Baptists were persecuted, sometimes fiercely, for standing for their convictions.

Pastor John, during prayer week at Bethlehem in 1987:
One of the values of praying together, in fact, is that it can cut the root of pride by exposing us to the humility and heart-searching longings that get expressed in the prayers of others. My own prayers have often been reproved and corrected and deepened just by being in a group of godly people of prayer.
In fact, I wonder if we should expect our private prayer life to advance in maturity and depth and intensity if we never pray with others who can lift us higher and take us deeper. Wouldn't that be like expecting a young person to become a gifted conversationalist, but always sending him away to play by himself whenever there was a serious conversation?

The Joy of Calvinism
by Jonathan Parnell | January 7, 2012
The foundation to our joy in God is God's own joy in himself. Christian Hedonism only makes sense when we understand God's supremacy in all things. He really is sovereign and he really is good.
And the five points of Calvinism are where we see these truths come together. The doctrines of grace articulate how God saves us in Jesus, for his glory and our joy.
This is why I'm excited about a forthcoming book from Crossway: Greg Forster's The Joy of Calvinism: Knowing God's Personal, Unconditional, Irresistible, Unbreakable Love (preorder from Amazon).
Forster has written this book to show that "real Calvinism is all about joy" . . .
I want to tell you what Calvinism says, especially what it says about your everyday walk with God and the purpose of the Christian life, and how you can have the joy of God even in spite of whatever trials and suffering the Lord h…
