The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado got involved in October, sending a letter to district officials accusing them of “committing felonies” by violating students’ rights.
“Monarch administrators have been unjustifiably violating students’ rights of privacy by unreasonably confiscating their cell phones and reading and transcribing students’ text messages,” the October letter read.
Boulder Valley School District administrators will no longer search student cell phones unless they've received permission from the teenager or a parent -- or if there's an imminent public-safety threat.
The district announced new guidelines for searching student cell phones Monday, nearly a year after a student at Louisville's Monarch High School accused an administrator of violating his rights by reading his phone's text messages.
