Carrie Green"October 1, 2011, was a sad day for business and other researchers everywhere. The U.S. Census Bureau, which has compiled the Statistical Abstract of the United States since 1878, officially announced that, due to budget cuts, it was terminating the collection of data for the Statistical Abstract (and some related, supplemental publications). A Facebook group called Save the US Statistical Abstract! (https://www.facebook.com/groups/193019537404038/) was formed, and although the 2012 edition will be the last to be compiled and published by the U.S. Census Bureau, it appears that the Statistical Abstract will, in fact, be saved! In March 2012 ProQuest announced that it would take over publication of this indispensable reference work beginning with the 2013 edition. You can access Statistical Abstracts going back to the first 1878 edition through the Census site for now. In terms of making the best use of the Statistical Abstracts via the Census, remember that the tables in it are excellent pointers to the original sources of data. As with the print version, you’ll want to go to the index section first and find out which number chart you need (or you can browse by category). Here is a link to the ProQuest guide on their new StatAbs product (with information about subscribing, too): http://proquest.libguides.com/statistical_abstract"
