The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America
Katherine Newman and Victor Chen research America's "missing class" that the authors contend consists of 57 million people that live between middle class and poverty. Ms. Newman and Mr. Chen profile this economic grouping of people that make $20,000 to $40,000 per year for a family of four that work without government assistance to remain financially solvent. Katherine Newman and Victor Chen present their book at the Cambridge Forum in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Katherine Newman is a sociology and public affairs professor at Princeton University. She is the author of eight books that include "No Shame in My Game: The Working Poor in the Inner City" and "Falling from Grace: Downward Mobility in the Age of Affluence."
Victor Chen is the founding editor and president of INTHEFRAY magazine. He is currently a doctoral candidate in sociology and social policy at Harvard University.
