Joan KreieBasic activities for building conceptual understanding of simple fractions. Five levels include visual demonstration of dividing pizza into slices to create fractions, stacking fraction bars to show equivalents, identifying fractions as the shaded part of a whole, placing fractions on a number line, and finding equivalent simple fractions.

Ann Baxter"Fractions: a Booster Activity" is an engaging IWB resource that would be useful for teachers to utilise in their fraction lessons. It could be used as either an introductory activity or review and revision game. It offers different types of interactive activities depending on the level that the students are at. Level 2 presents an activity that is similar to fraction walls and is especially good for developing knowledge of equivalent fractions. It can be closely related to the Fraction Toss game shown in FD4 by Bobis (2005).
This resource is effective in the way it explores fractions across a number of constructs which Van de Walle et al (2010) expresses as a very important factor of teaching fractions. It also has specific activities that investigate partitioning and iterating; two very important parts of being able to understand and use fractions (Van de Walle et al (2010).
This IWB activity would assist the achievement of Outcome NS2.4 (Syllabus, 2002, p. 62). -

Kate SomervilleThe introduction of fractions for students is developed through experiences within everyday life (Syllabus, 2002, p.40). The foundation of fractions vital for a developed understanding is that they are a division of a whole into equal parts (Mills, J. 2011). In order for students to accurately complete fraction computation they need a developed understanding of how fractions work. Understandings of fractions can be develop through multiple concepts such as part-whole, measure, division, operator and ratio (Van De Walle, et al. 2010, p.287). Stage 1 in the pizza fractions game (Birmingham Grid for Learning, 2012) introduces fraction through division, sharing a whole equally between multiple people. The game eventually progresses to using written fractions as the student's knowledge of fractions is developed. This game can be further developed within a classroom by considering the benefits of concrete materials and sensory motor experiences described within reading FD2 (Caswell, R. 2007). One possible authentic classroom experience developed from this is a 'maths picnic'. Students can excitedly solve familiar problems by dividing and sharing food into equal fractions for their friends.

Birmingham Grid for Learning (BGFL) is a web-based resource which provides teachers with comprehensive learning resources. The activities are not only educationally sound, but they put learning into context, to meet the needs of its users. The 'pizza activity' is employed most effectively when teachers incorporate the interactive whiteboard (IWB). The activity is not only fun and engaging, it's also ideal for students developing ideas about fraction concepts, and developing strategies for fraction computation (Van De Walle, 2010).
Van De Walle discusses describes a variety of ways teacher can implement models for fraction in their lessons. Van De Walle suggests that area models such as 'circular pieces' is an excellent way to introduce fractions to students. According to Van De Walle (2010, p. 288) "One advantage of the circular region is that it emphasizes the part-whole concept of fractions and the meaning of the relative size of a part to the whole."
BGFL has given us a resource which is connected to activities discussed by Rosemaree Caswell in Fraction from concrete to abstract using Playdough Mathematics (2007). Both resources focus on activities which making associations with real life situations. Pizzas are so frequently cut into 8 slices, every student can relate to a past experience. However, Caswell focuses on concrete materials contrasting the technology based activity presented by BGFL.
More importantly, NSW teachers can use this valuable resource to help their students achieve learning outcomes; NES1.4, NS1.4, NS2.4, NS3.4 and NS4.3 the NSW Mathematic Syllabus (NSW Board of Studies, 2002). -

Tina RyanIn order for teachers to produce good learning outcomes in a mathematics lesson on fractions, teacher need to engage the students in their learning (Caswell, 2007). Caswell has examined and highlighted the effectiveness of using play dough as a concrete material in teaching and learning about fractions.
Providing students with the opportunity to use concrete materials like play dough to enhance their understanding of fractions, encourages students to link concrete to abstract understanding (Casswell, 2007). Caswell emphasizes on the need to incorporate real life into the learning of fractions. Using the idea of a pizza is most common. It is for this reason that this interactive white board (IWB) game would be so effective in a early stage one class. The NSW Board of Studies (2002) outlines the student outcome in regards to fractions and decimals is to; Describe halves, encountered in everyday contexts, as two equal parts of an object. The first level uses the concept of a pizza to challenge students thinking about dividing a pizza (fourths and eighths).
The IWB game had a total of five levels. This provides a flexibility for the teacher to challenge students if required. It is a good assessment tool for the teacher to identify where some students might be struggling. This IWB game is suitable from ES1 (as identified in the NSW syllabus) through to stage two. -
