Ellen MeirChildren take a dive and help identify the probability of catching a red fish. Children must recognise the values of the red fish to the yellow fish. Prior knowledge of fractions is needed for this activity by engaging the children in establishing the ratio of the red fish to the yellow fish. Children can select the level they wish to participate depending on their understanding of probability and fractions.

Krystal CaseyThe game selected is a probability game called 'Fish Tank' made for stage one to two students. The aim of the game is to 'help' Pythagoras (character) work out the probability of him catching a red fish in the tank. To ensure students have a deep understanding of how to play this game, it is essential that they first know what probability is and how to apply probability skills to the game. Joyner, (2002), states that "probability is a measurement of the likely hood of future events" thus meaning that probability is the chance of something happening (MathsIsFun, 2011). For example; I will toss a coin and it will land on heads.
It is essential that students grasp the understanding of probability as probability is a challenging topic with concepts of randomness which is hard for students to understand (Barnes, 1998). By using this game as a whole group activity or in pair, students will understand probability and chance as it is an engaging game and can relate to the children's life i.e. having fish at home or visiting a pet shop to buy some fish.
Furthermore, this game relates to an activity called "design a bag" suggested in Van de Walle, (2010) where the students find the possibility of picking a colour out of the bag. -

Kiara ApplebyD&C - Children like investigating by doing and this activity allows them to also while relating to home life the children will be more engaged in the activity. A game that can be placed on the interactive whiteboard or children can enjoy by themselves on individual computers. This teaches children the concept of chance in an interesting and engaging way. Also the teacher can ask the children to simplify the fractions. This kind of interactive game links to Van de Walle, J. A., et al (2010) when they talk about exploring the concept of probability in chapter 22 "Exploring concepts of probability". This activity relates to Van de Walle et al (2010) activity called "design a bag" about how possible it was to take out a certain colour of the bag. This relates to the fish tank, the children are determining how possible it is to catch a red fish and then putting it into a fraction to show the probability of catching the red fish. This also relates to the mathematics syllabus (2002) pages 62-67 it talks about the different stages in school and what outcomes the children need to learn about during school.

anthony wellsThis is a brilliant interactive website that allows children to look at "Pythagoras' fish tank" and determine the fraction of red or yellow fish in the tank. Advanced students are challenged to add fish to create an equivalent fraction.
This activity is particularly relevant as it "real" to students, and large real life fractions (concrete materials) can often be hard to find (Zevenbergen et al, 2004; as cited in Mills, 2011). Van De Walle Et al. (2010) suggests that equivalent fractions are initially best presented as models that show equal representation of a fraction (e.g. pizzas that are divided into three-quarters and nine-twelfths). However I believe that using this website (on the IWB) in conjunction with students using equivalent fractions tables, could be a great way of informal assessment on the level of student understanding (stage 2 and stage3). -
Sandy HayerTeaching probability to young children is a very important task as daily decision making is based on probability. I believe that teaching probability to young children is a quite difficult task. For young children it is very important to start learning mathematical ideas where they can play and learn, this game is a clear example of a fun, learning experience for children. Sperry Smith (2009) states that in early childhood, the goal of probability is to move the child from thinking about an outcome as purely luck or a wild guess to a intuitive sense of chance.
Teachers have to start their lessons saying to children that probability describes the pattern of chance outcome. There are many everyday examples that may be used within the classroom, such as the chance of rain, the chance of finding a bus in the bus station and the chance of two students having their birthday on the same day. I consider that probability goes beyond mathematics. It involves logic and reasoning abilities, thus being an important aspect in a child's life. -

michelle linsdellThis activity is great, you can choose a difficulty level (1,2 or 3) then start the game to graph different kind of animals on the page. It allows children to have fun while learning about data and chance. It invoves animals, which will also engage and interest the students.

Dwyatt AllenAlthough this is a fairly basic game, it very useful for earlier stages as it explains to the students the concept of chance and probability and does this is a fun way.

jasmin montgomeryThis is an interactive fish tank site for early stage one to stage one children. Students are asked to work out the probability of catching a particular colour fish. This is relevant to the NSW syllabus as it can be used as an introduction to data handling where they can record their results in picture or number form (Board of Studies, 2002).
