Michele RennebergExcellent interactive problem solving activity that can be deciphered as a class and then lead into discussion of algebraic equations. This activity supports the Syllabus Outcome WMS3.2 (Syllabus, 2002, p.149) and encourages large group discussion and student-student collaboration of strategies as suggested in Van De Walle et al. (2010, p.53). The teacher could display the problem on the IWB and give the students 10 minutes to work out themselves, encouraging the use of diagrams to provide a 'visual sketchpad' (WM3, Diezmann, 2002, p.4) before establishing class dialogue about how to approach it. This activity would work best as a student-driven one, with the teacher stepping back and giving gentle guidance in order to promote dialogue and sharing of ideas within the class.
