Vicki ChaseSimilar to Wordle, students type (or copy & paste) in a piece of text and WordSift sorts the text based on word frequency. The visual thesaurus that displays beneath the words is a nice addition in WordSift. With the visual thesaurus, students immediately see how words are grouped semantically.

saderann11This takes key words and uses it to find various types of visual content. This works great when there isn't a ton of extra material in your book.

Tracy WatanabeCreates a word cloud -- great for theme and word choice
Then creates interactive word cloud -- with clickable words -- select a word and the visual word map thesaurus shows up, plus quotes and main ideas, plus research and encyclopedia info about that word.
Try putting in a speech or other text ... it will identify main themes based on most frequent use of words... or will identify word choice... or use for vocabulary... -

Janetta GartonWordSift is an on-line, free tool to support effective vocabulary instruction by helping students identify key words in text, as well as creating a visual resource using the web. Teachers and students can also use the tool as a way to skim text and increase comprehension. Simply copy and paste text into the window, click sift, and the fifty most common words in the text will appear with the most frequent words appearing larger than the others. The most frequent words are automatically entered into the text box just below which is linked to Google Images, causingimages of these words to appear. Then, the most frequent one word is automatically placed into the visual thesaurus and a list of the sentences from the text that contain the word are listed for the user. The user can click on any of these sentences to see the sentence within the context of the text. The visual and textual information is so abundant, automatically organized, and user-friendly that you can find something for everyone! Watch this short introductory video to get a better sense of how to navigate this tool.
