Attempts to establish a new subsection of the AAA were undertaken "...at the 1992 annual meeting of the society for the Social Studies of Science, where a group of American anthropologists (Michael Fischer, Sharon Traweek, Rayna Rapp, David Hess, Lisa Handwerker, Shirley Gorenstein, and Daivd Hakken) met to discuss strategies for establishing a Committee on Science and Technology within the AAA."
