NeoOffice is actually kinda horrific since it's codebase is kinda buggy and wayyyy out of date.
-
only MS Office and GIMP are "essential" for anybody in school.
-
Office? No thanks... I guess some need excel but try Mellel (www.redlers.com) - nice, cheap ($30), quick and quite a powerful word processor. Of course you can't beat the price of Neo Office, but honeslty before you even think of buying MS Office at least try Mellel or Neo Office. Me, I'm a Mellel guy...

Don't forget <a href="http://web.mac.com/http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22481">iProcrastinate</a. It's a handy app for keeping track of assignments and projects, along with their due dates and stage of completion, for different classes. It's very small, but very useful if you have trouble keeping yourself organized like I do.

Great list, but NeoOffice is really just as good as MS Office for most purposes, and it even supports Intel Macs in its newest beta version. Oh, it's free too.

Since there are so many lists of essential Mac software, I figured I would compile my own....with a twist. This list is geared towards software that I think most other college students can benefit from.

Sente - Serious students, especially in the humanities, need to keep track of all of those references for their bibliographies, and Sente is quickly becoming a great app for this. (It's up there with Bookends, and EndNote has stagnated a little on the Mac end.) Plus, it integrates nicely with Mellel; what more could you ask for.
