teachergregVisuwords is identified as a visual dictionary and thesaurus tool. The tool is online and allows you to search a word or phrase for deeper understanding. After the word or phrase is entered, a visual is created with the definition and words that relate. The visual will contain the part of speech, and lines in between the relatable words that create a web. Each line has a pattern and color representing the relationship between the two words. The line patterns could mean “is a word for,” “relates to,” “is part of, “opposes,” and more. This will be extremely useful for students struggle with vocabulary. These could be ELL students who are learning English words, students with learning disabilities, and students who learn more effectively with visuals. Reading from a dictionary might not be as effective as searching the word relationships visually to identify the meaning.
Example:
http://visuwords.com/baseball%20field
In my class, a student could mention that he is a baseball player. The material that our class is reading could relate to the student’s experience with a baseball field. What if an ELL student is new to our country and is not familiar with baseball? Using Visuwords would be a great tool to help the student understands what it is. As they enter in “baseball field,” student will find “ a scene of action,” “seats,” “midfield,” and so on. By seeing the words that relate, the student can narrow down what a baseball field is. They can see it is where an athletic activity occurs and it could relate to an activity in their lives. This visual tool will build connections between students as it builds connections between words.Visuwords vocabulary dictionary thesaurus visual web relationships definition parts of speech connections

jamesmckennaThis resource can be used in a variety of ways in the classroom in order to support vocabulary acquisition and deeper understanding of language. One use might be if students are reading a difficult text (especially an older one with archaic language) they could have this open for when they come upon difficult words. I could also imagine using this in a research capacity to trace concepts and words and their history. So I would categorize this resource as both assistive and content based. For classrooms with a wide range of language skills as mine do, this could be an indispensable tool.

erika_marieVisuwords is a resource that allows text to be visually represented in an appealing format. It acts as a dictionary and thesaurus. I think the Visuwords website would be helpful for my students. The majority of my students respond well to visuals when learning. Being able to type a word whether it is familiar or unfamiliar to them and retrieve various results is beneficial. My students also are engaged with the various colors and visually it is appealing rather than overstimulating. It also seems efficient more so than other resources such as Search Cube and Confusing Words.

Terin VoisineThis website is awesome! I love how it generates the visual automatically and uses color to differentiate between the type of words it's using. I also like that you can put the mouse over any word in the graphic and see it's definition as well. A great way to introduce vocabulary in almost any discipline.

cbridge2I think the way this site brings word to life is extraordinary. It not only explains the word in full detail, it also gives students core principles in connection to the words at hand. What an awesome way to probe a students thought process.

KRISTA WYMANI showed this site to my 4th Grade Language Arts students and they loved it. This visual dictionary creates a word web that shows how words are interconnected, including various definitions, examples, antonyms, and synonyms. The color-coding idea is great because it can be difficult sometimes to tell the difference between the types of words - nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Each node is color-coded and offers a deeper explanation if you hover over it. In terms of supporting diverse learners, I could see using this site when working with multi-meaning words as it shows how they're interconnected.

Megan TincherThis tool is a fascinating look at the many definitions, associations, and all types of connections words can have as powerful connotations for ideas. Whether letting the site guide you via the "Random" button next to the search or putting in your own word to explore, the resulting diagram provides a new way for students and teachers alike to make meaning out of text. I'm always looking for ways to enhance my instruction of vocabulary and I believe directing students to this site when they don't know a word or need to tackle a vocabulary list can give them a richer experience in beginning to understand how words are used. From the practical standpoint of learning words in context, this visual setup allows students to literally see how context works. Furthermore, it's fun to look at the many connections a word can have, like the chosen screenshot here for "literature"!

Devi VenugopalShared by Devi Venugopal. This is an online graphical dictionary and it is free. It is a great site for learning the meanings of words and other related words. Due to its visual element, it can be very engaging for students. Word relationships are shown as connected “bubbles”. This can be very useful for middle school and up however for younger kids it may be somewhat of a visual overload for some words.
