Pattern is way to decide some choices now, leave rest for later when designing.
Guy Steele talk in 1998 about desinging languages to be growable. Gives examples of ways sun is working on to grow java. At ~ 35 shows all the sub-types of numbers, like complex numbers, vector, intervals, and on and on. Speaks of using generic types and operator overloading for making things look like the built in language, but a little ironic considering he's talking about java which feels extremely verbose to me. A better example today would be Ruby. Lisp is the king but too unfamiliar looking?
Generic type is a pattern of building types.
