timhelmstedtto take advantage of you. A good customer will take into account extraordinary roadblocks that nobody could have anticipated (say, a critical vendor goes out of business), but it has to be much more Earth shattering than "it's harder than I thought".
It's not unheard of for a consultant to go back to the well on a fixed-bid project, laying out a case why the project has gone over and why you need to be paid more. This is always uncomfortable, and the only way to manage this is if the customer has been in the loop in fairly substantial detail throughout the project.
If you've been telling the customer "it's going great" for six weeks, you're going to have a hard time showing up on the due date explaining why you're not finished and also asking for more money. -
