Earlier this week, a 2nd grade teacher came by and asked, “I want to teach kids dialogue in their writing using comics. Is there a free program that helps me do that?” The answer is a definite YES. There are several programs online that you can use. Although we quickly stumbled upon BitStrips.com as a simple tool–which is what I used to make the comic above–I knew there were other tools available, as well…through Thinkfinity.org.

In my many, many years in the classroom, I have learned that all students become engaged in the learning process when comics or comic-strips are used as a learning strategy. Thinkfinity provides a numberof advantages when teaching with comics because they provide examples of how to integrate the comic into all disciplines. Read.Write.Think which is one of the Partners in the Thinkfinity consortium, has the interactive ready for the student to utilize with extension lessons and ideas on how to implement it into math, science, reading, writing, etc. This interactive after being populated can then be printed for group discussion, explanation, or individual grading.

For the creative student who is always doodling in class, you might also check out Doodle Splash in the Student Materials of Read.Write.Think in Thinkfinity as this will bring that "dreamer" back into your focused lesson. Artsedge, has one entire lesson on Drawing Political Cartoons under their Social Studies lessons.in Thinkfinity.

Teaching with comics can be effectively used in the classrom from K to college.
