anroberson06I love this site for two reasons. First of all, it is affiliated with UNC-Chapel Hill, my alma mater twice over. Secondly, it is yet another free resource I can point teachers and students to when looking for easy-to-ready, accessible books. At the time of writing this annotation, there are books in 27 languages on this site, an obvious advantage for ELLs and those studying world languages. There are a variety of text-to-speech and display options for students with disabilities. Students may also use this resource to create their own books, a method discussed in this class that helps bridge the gap between native and English language learning.

kmokaneTar Heel Reader is a free online eBook collection. Readers can use text-to-speech options and change the background color to support their reading. Students or teachers can create their own eBooks to fit their learning needs using images from Flickr or personal uploads. This site has a very simple interface and large buttons so it is easy to learn and easy to use. Because all of the books are generated by the community of users, however, the collection is small and may not fit curricular needs or be of high interest to the student. It is definitely worth a look, especially for families with beginning readers or students who benefit from audio support.

erika_marieThis website would be fantastic to use with my students. With its ease of access, simple yet informational sentences and pictures my students would really enjoy this tool. It could be displayed on the smart board and my students could take turns pressing the next button to ‘turn the page’ so to speak. I also like how the resource offers a variety of books from different categories. With any unit you are teaching, you could use these books as either an introduction piece, middle piece or review piece of a unit. What a great find!
