Janis BaseggioPurpose: An interactive map site that allows user to put marker pins in a Google Map, attach text, URL's or images to the pins. The user can then share the map and information by providing someone the URL for the "annotated map".
Bias: None noted
Credibility: Google Maps API - this is a Google app as part of Google earth. Google Earth is a well-known "map" tool. No information "About Us" is available. The only contact information is an email link to Pininthemap.com. There is no "date last updated" for possible border changes, etc.
Readablility - The map can be a bit detailed and difficult to read, but the user has the ability to zoom in or out as well as up, down, left, or right. Directions for use are provided, but younger students will need to be shown how to use it. It is fairly simple to use.
Advertising: There is a significant amount of advertising in the right-hand column of the site. There is no pop-up advertising.
Summary: This is a basic interactive web map that has several free features. The user can "pin" certain locations to mark them and then add text, pictures, etc. The map can be saved and shared with others by providing them with the users specific URL. This is a useful tool for students to study different parts of the world and share their information.
Uses: I thought students would enjoy marking the areas that the stories they read originated. As a class, we could use one URL and students could mark the location, share the name and type of folklore, and perhaps give a brief summary. Students could then go in and see what others have read and see the country of origin. -
