Amanda HansenThis is one of the most incredible websites I have ever found. It is an interactive storybook that places the individual at the computer in the place of a slave on a Maryland farm. The story explains how you, as a slave, live and work all day for your master, and how you have lost most of your family. After the story provides some background on you as a slave, you get the choice to stay at the Maryland farm with your brother, to be sold, or try and escape to the north with your sister. Students are given the opportunity to choose their own path, and discover what happened when slaves attempted to flee north, or when they stayed and were sold to the deep south. This website provides the opportunity for students to reflect on how their lives would be as slaves, and put themselves in that position for a short period of time. I would use this in the classroom when teaching a lesson on slavery. I would take the class into a computer lab, where they each could sit at the computer and follow along with the interactive storybook. I would then have them choose their own path, stay with the brother, or flee with the sister, and see where that path takes them. Doing this provides the opportunity for assessment by having the students reflect on the path they chose, and what they think could have happened if they chose the other path. Did they make the correct decision? This is by far one of the best websites I have ever found, and I hope to be able to use it in my own classroom someday.
