NBC attracted an average of 24.1 million viewers for Saturday night's prime-time broadcast, the most for the first night of competition since the Atlanta Games in 1996, according to NBC.
riday night's taped opening ceremony -- an event NBC worked diligently to keep out of cyberspace -- attracted 34.2 million people, up 35% from the last summer games.
Meanwhile, online, 4.8 million people watched 3.1 million video streams on Saturday at nbcolympics.com. That's more than four times the peak number of daily streams during 2006's winter Games in Torino, Italy.
In the first two days of the games, 90% of viewers watched the Games on TV alone, with nearly 10% watching on TV and online, according to Alan Wurtzel, NBC's president of research. Only 0.2% watched on the Internet alone, Mr. Wurtzel said.
