Paul GillinSmule (www.smule.com) has announced the winners of the company’s “This Contest Blows” Ocarina video contest. Conceived as a way to reward its raving Ocarina fans with $1,000 per winner, the contest attracted a number of surprising and creative videos. Many contestants demonstrated musical talent, as well as Smulean je ne sais quoi.
The ten winners are:
* Hardrockgrl’s “Oh Shenandoah” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glrpGjFit1k
* David Choi’s cover of “Hot N Cold” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhhtFAT2HqM
* "Sadness and Sorrow" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWQF5oxR4_E
* Monkey Head http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fNvztXz2r8
* Good sleep, fast sleep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP0-hKc63y8
* Greetings from Hungary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qblhPtY5MU
* "Whistle Stop" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa0EcHPFhtE
* "Carol of the Bells" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFQ7GTDlsO0
* "Song of Storms" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olO1J8M8IaY
* And finally, “Music of the Nose” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6HHZLDdPqM, (in addition to the $1,000 prize, Noseflute will also receive a box of Kleenex and a bottle of Purell!)
Some entries were so peculiar that the panel of Smule judges felt compelled to add a special category of videos, the ‘Oca-razzies.’ Some of the strangest submissions include:
* A cat playing Ocarina http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBUuqWQbUuI
* Someone ‘playing’ his iPhone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_SBi-Ac9-4 with his posterior…!!!
* Singing, (remember William Hung?), over another entrant’s Ocarina playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJc6UxDJkAQ
* …and many more, too bizarre to describe. These are available for viewing on Smule’s website http://ocarina.smule.com/contest/
Additionally, since the intent is to nurture budding Ocarina talent, Smule will extend the contest to Friday, February 13, and announce 5 more $1,000 prize winners on Smule’s Mule live broadcast February 16th. -

- In order to play your Ocarina, you will need to blow into the microphone (you will see a small gold arrow where to blow). The mic is sensitive, so try not to blow very hard (if you are puffing your cheeks, you are blowing too hard).
- For best results, blow softly, as if you're blowing kisses.
- To make a clear separation between the notes, say the word "tu" or "du". This technique is called "tonguing".

How To Play
Because we feel that Ocarina is a very evocative and engaging instrument for performers of all levels, we want to make sure that everyone can join in the fun. We're posting a whole bunch of scores to help you learn and enjoy Ocarina. These scores use an easy-to-follow system that requires no past musical training.
Each score is presented using a simple 4-hole diagram, where the filled-in blue hole means you should press and hold your finger on that hole while you blow. There are 16 possible different finger-combinations available for you to play within each mode, and we display them in our scores like this:
In Ocarina, you can choose to tune your instrument using 8 sets of pitches called modes. These modes can be thought of as patterns of notes, similar to scales, which are based on a starting pitch called the root. The mode consists of certain notes from a musical scale above and below the root.
For complete sets of scales detailing the notes available in each mode in Ocarina starting on each root pitch, including the associated fingering diagram number, see these detailed modal scale .pdfs:
In our online Forum you can also find onging discussions on how to best choose modes to create your own scores here, here, and here.
To get you started here are a few classic melodies with which you can whet your virtual whistle:
