I would have to agree that students would need alot of structure to handle the site on their own, but the site is still one of my favorites. I have used it a lot with group and whole class activities. There are great examples here to use to review or when the class is learning a new objective.

This is very, very true. Speaking from experience - it works better as a demonstration tool for a class, and for one on one, rather than letting kids just jump on and figure it out themselves...

I personally dislike this page. There are a lot of manipulatives available, but it is more effective as as a teacher tool than a student manipulative. Instructions would have to be HIGHLY detailed to use in a classroom with a group of students.

I am a big fan of the NLVM website- I use it quite frequently in my classroom with my students. I think all children benefit from manipulatives- math is fairly abstract and relies on your ability to visualize numbers and the number line. Helping students equate numbers with meaning is very important! Another good website is Illumination's (http://illuminations.nctm.org), which operates similarly to the NLVM. Once students have developed some background knowledge about topics, I generally look to websites with games to help them practice. Two that I like are: fun4thebrain.com and http://mrnussbaum.com for continued math practice!

I too enjoyed the Virtual Math Manipulatives site. Teaching 5th grade, the lessons and algorithms can get quite abstract, as Martha mentioned above. I find it is harder and harder to show why a certain algorithm works with the limited manipulatives in my classroom. This site provides not only useful manipulatives, but also a format online that students will learn necessary technology skills from and enjoy. The matrix table on the homepage makes it simple for finding manipulatives and ideas for lessons that correlate with units of study in certain areas at a particular grade. Thanks too for the extra resource ideas, Martha. I try to have my students practice math facts for 15 minutes each evening. I will add fun4thebrain.com and mrnussbaum.com to my website as resources they can use to practice their nightly math.
